LEAD TESTING RESULTS
JUNE 13, 2018
UPDATE:
The District has implemented the additional corrective action of replacing fixtures and conducted follow-up testing on May 12, 2018. Those results are provided via a link at the bottom of the page. All sources have now tested below acceptable levels and no further action or testing is required. However, the district will continue to flush all water sources each day before the start of school as recommended by USEPA.

UPDATE:
The District has implemented corrective action and conducted follow-up testing. Those results are provided via a link at the bottom of the page. Only one source (#72) tested above 20 ppb in the follow-up testing. That source will remain out of service until we have replaced the fixture and conducted re-testing to determine if acceptable levels have been reached. While all other sources tested within acceptable levels, the District is choosing to replace fixtures that tested above 5 ppb and below 15 ppb. These are the kitchen island, kitchen 2-bay and rooms 32, 33, 34, 35, 36 and 37.

SUBJECT: Results of Drinking Water Testing for Lead Content
SITE: Monroe Elementary School
Dear Parents and Staff,
Casey-Westfield Community Unit School District #C-4 has performed comprehensive sampling for Lead in our potable water sources (PWS) at Monroe Elementary School potentially utilized for drinking and/or cooking in accordance with the new Senate Bill 550 recently passed in Illinois. The sampling was completed in accordance with the Senate Bill 550 requirements and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) document titled “Lead in Drinking Water at Schools and Child Care Facilities” last updated November 9, 2015. Casey-Westfield Community Unit School District #C-4 hired the specialty firm, Environmental Consultants, LLC (EC), to perform the lead testing. Sampling was performed by trained and licensed personnel in accordance with USEPA, United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and State of Illinois Regulations and Guidelines.
The USEPA action level for lead in drinking water is 15.0 parts per billion (ppb) for PWS. The USEPA document titled “Lead in Drinking Water at Schools and Child Care Facilities” last updated November 9, 2015 identifies an action level for drinking water collected from a plumbing fixture as 20.0 ppb. The USEPA recommends plumbing fixtures be removed from service when water sample results exceed 20.0 ppb. In addition, Senate Bill 0550 directs districts is to inform parents and staff of any water sources testing above 5 ppb.
Results from the district are as follows:
Monroe Elementary School
27 potable water sources
54 water samples collected
2 results greater than 20 ppb
0 results greater than 15 ppb but less than 20 ppb
12 result greater than 5 ppb
Two water sources, the sink located in Room #35 and the sink in Room #72, were identified in excess of the Federal level of 20 ppb. These fixtures have been removed from service at this time. It should be noted that Room #35 is a vacant classroom in the PK-K wing and no students have used water from that fixture. Also, Room #72 is the sensory room adjacent to Mrs. Smock’s classroom and was used only for hand-washing. So students have not drunk water from either of these sources. The fixtures will only be returned to service once corrective actions have been implemented and follow up test results meet acceptable standards. Furthermore, the district is preparing a Preventative Maintenance plan to manage the district’s plumbing fixtures in the future.
Senate Bill 550 requires districts to inform parents and staff of any water sources testing above 5 ppb, but requires no corrective action. The following water sources were reported above 5 ppb.
Kitchen Island – Hand Sink
Kitchen 2-Bay Sink
Room #36 – Sink
Room #37 – Sink
Room #32 – Sink
Room #33 – Sink
Hallway outside Room 71 - Fountain
Nurse’s Office – Drinking Fountain
Nurse’s Office – Drinking Fountain
Hallway outside Room 87 - Fountain
Hallway outside Room 87 - Fountain
Hallway outside Room 99 - Fountain
Even though no corrective action is required for water sources testing between 5 ppb and 15 ppb, the district is implementing corrective actions and conducting follow up tests on these sources as well.
A complete copy of all test results can be viewed on the district’s website at www.caseywestfield.org.
The district understands the importance of this testing related to the safety of all building occupants. The district is fully committed to ensure the safety of the building occupants as our highest priority in all situations.
